Let’s be honest: losing weight is hard, especially for women over fifty. But there are some things you can do to speed things along. I have four tips to burn calories with no effort using NEAT — Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. Basically, this is about turning up your body’s thermostat to make it burn fat faster. And it honestly requires no effort on your part!
This system does not replace the need for a healthy diet or a committed exercise plan, it’s simply a way to burn a few extra calories every day. But remember, as I always advise, tiny changes can yield BIG results! Let’s say you burn just 100 more calories a day by following these tips, that’s 10 pounds in a year! (BTW if you cut out two cookies a day equivalent to 100 calories that could be 20 pounds this year with SO LITTLE EFFORT!)
follow along with me...
- KEEP COOL. Since our bodies are naturally warm, cold temperature causes the body to work overtime. Make sure to set your thermostat to a low temperature, perhaps 65 degrees. Your body will need to burn your fat to keep warm. That shivering sensation means you’re on overdrive and that’s a good thing!
- HAVE A CUP OF JOE. Caffeine increases your metabolic rate which means you burn more calories. Also, it increases an enzyme (lipase) in your body that helps break down fat and can act as a diuretic. Although coffee can assist you burn calories, make sure not to consume too much caffeine. Excess caffeine can cause restlessness and can be rough on your tummy. If this happens, take a break from coffee.
- KEEP SOMETHING MOVING. Who knew that simple movements could actually burn significant calories if done consistently. Shaking your leg, tapping your pen on the desk, or pacing around a room burn calories and rev up your metabolism. If you aren’t someone who has these habits try doing two things at the same time like walking when you’re on the phone. Adding more movement, however small, will result in a higher daily calorie burn.
- CHEW GUM. Chewing gum burns about 10 calories per hour. Even though this doesn’t seem like a lot, doing it for a small amount of time each day adds up. Make sure to choose a sugarless gum to avoid any unnecessary visits to the dentist. Also, chewing has been shown to keep you away from munching on fattening goodies.
I know some of my tips to burn calories may seem inconsequential, but I am a big believer in tiny changes. This is a system I have used for most of my life to keep my weight in control and it has worked. I admit I follow a healthy diet most of the time and exercise consistently, but I am also now sitting at my computer wearing a sweater and drinking a cup of coffee! 🙂
